Cassandra's Creative Bent

I've been a big fan of Cassandra Barney's art for years.
I fell in love with her Dad's art 25 years ago when I saw his
commissioned painting for the Utah Shakespeare Festival's
25th anniversary.
This year at the 50th anniversary, my husband bought me
that same James Christensen's print.

Cassandra and her sister are both renowned artists
in their own rights.
They come by their talents honestly.
Cassandra's husband Dan, was a favorite art and
photography teacher of my two oldest daughters.

We enjoyed a visit before Mason left on his 2 year
mission to Washington DC.

Have you ever met people where you have immediately felt a connection?
People you feel like you've known forever?
This is the case with our friends, The Brannings,
from Houston, Texas.

Our daughter, Coryn met their daughter Courtney
in a film class during their university years.
They became fast friends.
As a result we were blessed to meet Courtney's family.
Now we can't imagine life without their friendship.

despite the fact that it is a "New Year."
Ha, Ha! (Lost my bet on that one.)

Cammy starting laughing loudly and said:

Haunting Harps

Today our family attended an absolutely awesome recital!
Imagine 40 harps on the same stage all playing together.
My talented friend Ashley, along with other harp teachers
and their respective students present this
traditional recital each year.

Harps covered in cobwebs.
Harpists disguised as goblins, devils, pirates and the like.
And how could it be any more festive with pieces titled:
Zombie, The Adams Family, Bella's Lullabye,
Cruella De Ville, Skeleton Song, and Harry Potter Theme?
And a special treat:
We May Not Be Vampires, But We're Still Men
sung by Ashley's husband Mat. and his brothers.
(Also fun to watch Marilyn, one of my new vocal students
playing her harp on the front row.)

And...we got to see one of our favorite plays.
Noises Off is one of the greatest farces ever written.
We have seen it on different stages.
This production didn't disappoint.

The Black Cat Returns

One morning this past week as I came outside
to pick up the morning paper,
the black cat was sitting in my flower bed.

We never see him all year.
He shows up every October.
I kid you not!

Mindy Gledhill and Sarah Sample feel the spirit during "This Little Light O' Mine."

I was a doubter.
I figured the concert would be cancelled.
It had rained for two days
and was SO COLD.

Mindy (with newborn in tow) sound checks with "For the Beauty of the Earth."

"The Lower Lights" had faith
that the show would go on.
And did it ever!
Mindy contacted us that morning and said:
"We're not wimps. We're going for it!"
So my husband and I showed up and honored our commitment.
The stage was set up from 12:00-4:00.
The rain/snow mix started up again just as all was finished.
So, the team made the decision to break it down
and move it below for shelter from the storm.
No small feat.

And people came!
Even Mayor Curtis came and thanked all who had made these
concerts happen.

And then the Mayor declared the day
CJANE DAY
and presented her with a tiara to wear as
Queen of Provo.
And if you know Courtney Jane,
she loved EVERY MINUTE of the spotlight.
She was so funny and played it to the hilt.

Paul Jacobsen solos.

The Lower Lights
were everything they were hyped to be.
The best of an old-time hymn revival.

Dustin Christensen opened.
He was fabulous.
Great country/folk sound.
And such a nice guy.

And our walk-in warm-up singer
Stephanie Mabey was quirky and terrific.
Her song called "Zombies" was a hit!

Even the amazing Ryan Shupe
Showed up unannounced and played his fiddle
With the Lights.
(Court is one of his biggest fans.)

And wow!
Can that Debra Fotheringham sing!

Ryan Tanner is so fun to listen to.
He brings the soul to his music.

Such a great experience to be part of this summer.
Can't wait for next season!

This tree is called the 'Love Tree'.

Apparently it has been there since the pioneers

We are thrilled at the announcement
today by President Monson
that the Provo Tabernacle
will become a Temple.

After that session of General Conference
Court and I
drove down University Avenue
and saw the Tabernacle.
Imagine our delight to see
colorful helium-filled balloons
tied to the fences
surrounding the site.
A large hand-painted sign was attached
to the front reading:
"HAPPY DAY!"
Yes indeed.

And on the way home
above 'Y" mountain
we saw a beautiful rainbow.

We are also smiling along with our Coryn
and the members in PARIS FRANCE!

BYU's Vocal Point

A few weeks ago I saw my friend Lowell in the church parking lot.
Knowing he was an alum of Vocal Point
I asked if he had recently attended their 20 year reunion.
He had.
He told me I would not want to miss this season's
"The Sing-off" on NBC.
Vocal Point had been chosen as contestants.

I have loved Vocal Point since the first time I heard them.
(One of my former high school students
was a founding member of the 1991 group.)
I have loved "The Sing-off" since it premiered.
It is a classy show with terrific, qualified judges.
This year a nice addition is 3 time Grammy winner
Sara Bareilles,
who is no stranger to acapella
having performed in a group as a student at
UCLA.
Vocal Point brought down the house
on the first episode.

Puppets on Strings

Cammy and I attended a show by
The Tanglewood Marionettes.
It was part of the BYU Arts Series.
We saw the presentation of
the Greek Legend
Perseus and Medusa.
Quite amazing when you realize
that only two puppeteers
perform the entire show.
Loved it!

"They Did Not Win"

Sunday we attended the 9/11 Commemoration
hosted by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
I'm so glad we went.
It was the perfect event to honor the day.
UVU President Matt Holland gave the keynote address.
Mayor Curtis also shared some emotional and personal feelings.
Reverend Dean Jackson gave a beautiful prayer
of healing and hope.

At the conclusion of the program we left the chapel
and went outside with the police and fire departments,
listened to some words by Chaplain Linda P. Walton,
and each of us, to the strains of beautiful bagpipes,
let red, white and blue balloons float
skyward in remembrance of those lives lost.

Imagine Dragons frontman, Dan, crowd surfing at end of concert

I guess you will all be relieved to not have to see
another photo of me with a another random musician.
But, darn it!
I wish I'd had my camera last night.
So many awesome photo ops...

Imagine Dragons were amazing!
And they were very nice, especially lead singer Dan.
At the end of the night he gave me a big bear hug
and thanked me for all the hard work
and the beautiful greenroom.
It was nice to meet several of the band's
parents who had flown in for the show.
The band is now relocating to LA.
This band who started just a few years ago
at BYU and played shows at Velour
will be big!
Mark my word.

This is one of the reasons I was sad not to have my camera.
I mean, who doesn't want a photo with
adorable David Archuleta?

I had just brought the band on deck and was standing
stage left by the police barricades
when I felt a shoulder next to mine.
I turned my head and there was David.
I was caught of guard but managed to compose myself and say:
"Hi David. Did you have a night off to hang with
us here in Provo?"
He said:
"Yeah, I came to support my friend Dan from
Imagine Dragons."
We talked a little and then CJane came off stage
and Mindy Gledhill introduced David
and CJane grabbed Justin (our photographer) and said:
"I want a picture with David. Find me some light."
So I asked the security guard to let David through and we
found a light spot and the shot was taken quickly.
David was understandably anxious to get back to his friends
in the crowd, but gracious none-the-less.

Fun night, perfect weather and a crowd of almost 4000!

Steadfast Friends

Trey, his wife Ann, me, Robbie

Saturday we drove to the beautiful Heber Valley to reunite with longtime friends.
The morning started with a 35 mile bike ride
(not including me...ha, ha!)
followed by a lovely catered picnic.
It was a celebration of sorts.
20 years ago, at age 31, my friend Trey was hit by a semi while riding his bike
in Wichita, Kansas.
It is miraculous he lived.
He was in the hospital for 6 months.
It turned the world upside down for his wife and two little boys.
After numerous surgeries and constant pain
he was back competing and doing all the things he loves.
He is literally "Ironman"
with a rod in his spine and metal throughout his body.
He and his wife have competed in triathlons,
Ironman competitions and are avid skiers and bikers.
His wife, Ann has also had more than her share of health challenges,
yet these two continue to lift others
and live life without complaint.

It's a good story:)

I met Trey and Robbie at BYU.
We lived in the same apartment complex.
Robbie became my roommate, best friend and life of the party.
Trey was our family brother and became another best friend.
We spent a lot of time together.
While at BYU Trey was baptized a member of
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
I sang at his baptism.
Fast forward a year.

Robbie, Trey and I all received mission calls on the same day.
Robbie to Honduras, Trey to Taiwan, and me to Houston, Texas.
We even had a joint "mission farewell."
We all entered the Missionary Training Center on the same day.

On that first day at the MTC, I ran into Ann.

I had gotten to know Ann the summer before when I had served as her Visiting Teacher.
Later, we were no longer in the same ward and lost track of each other.

Imagine my surprise to learn
Ann was also going to the same mission as me!!

Trey, Robbie and I would try to meet each day at lunch in the cafeteria.
One day Trey saw us talking to Ann and later asked if
Robbie and I would introduce him to her.
She had caught his eye.
So we did.
Long story short:

Ann and I became mission companions in Houston.
I encouraged both of them to write to each other.
Even when Ann hesitated, not knowing if she should
(she knew he had a girl "waiting" for him)
I pushed a bit.
And they wrote.

Later they were married in the Salt Lake Temple.
I was Ann's maid of honor.
Our three families have stayed connected over 30 years.
Eternal friendships.
The best.

Seriously. How Does Someone Kill Zucchini?

I'm asking why for the past two years my plants have not produced?
I thought zucchini was the plant that everyone could grow.
I actually like zucchini:)
I don't sneak them onto my neighbor's porch in the middle of the night.
My plants looked good.
Produced yellow blooms.
Started to form the beginnings of the zucchini.
And then poof!
It disappeared.

Ten years ago my friend and neighbor Suzie T. gifted me with a CD.
She said, "I think you are really going to appreciate this young man's voice."
I was surprised at the depth of his sound and quality at just 20 years old!
I became a fan and have enjoyed all of his albums.

Fast forward 10 years.
My daughter treated me to his "Straight to You" Concert.
Awesome seats, Court!

Imagine our surprise when Josh entered the arena
from the portal right next to us!
There were two stages
And he performed right in front of us.
He was warm, funny, gracious, energetic.
And to hear him LIVE was an out of body experience.

It certainly doesn't help me look any better:)

Another successful Rooftop Concert!
I didn't know much about this Joshua James
other than
he has a huge fan base,
he toured with John Mayer,
and his debut album was #1
folk album on iTunes.

After hearing him I would describe his music as very "Bob Dylanesque"
but with a MUCH better voice.
After meeting and having a few nice conversations with him
throughout the evening, I would describe him as a very unique, deep-thinking,
free-spirited and grateful person.
I learned he lives on a farm with his cute wife above American Fork
on a beautiful mountain called Willamette.
He has a huge garden, is a vegetarian, has beehives, and a pet goat.
He told me that the next morning he was going on an 80 mile bike ride with his brother
and would return right before singing another concert.
I told him to drink a lot of water:)
When I asked if it was okay if I put his "blue-eyed mug" on my blog
(with a readership of 5)
he laughed and said "Sure!...I have a blog too."

Sayde Price opened the show.
She has a very cool and unusual voice.
Such control.
Especially in her upper register.
Sayde was rather quiet and reserved.
She told us she works two jobs:
at an art museum and as a waitress.

And our "walk-in" act was a revelation.
The Mollies were delightful.
I had seen one of their music videos which I loved.
Very retro, ala Donna Reed, and random.
Sweet voices and sweet sound.

The restaurant Communal catered our greenroom.
Can I just say it was absolutely amazing?
That's Ethan in the photo above.
He is the executive chef.
He was fabulous.
He went over and beyond with his creations:
Pork Porchetta and Fennel
Grilled Tri-Tip Steak
with Salt Roasted Potatoes
French Green Beans w/ almonds
Summer Vegetable Gratin
(for the vegans in the group)
Bill and I love this restaurant.
Can't go very often as it is pricey,
but well worth it because of
the quality of the fresh food.

Our conversation took us from hot flashes,
to shape-shifting bodies as a result of
birthing beautiful children,
to our different LDS mission experiences,
to actors, superman husbands,
eating good food,
and celebrating life, family and friends.
She is an inspiration and fun to be around.

There is one common link I have found with all of these
musicians, organizers,
community volunteers,
business owners
that I have rubbed-shoulders with this summer:
They are GRATEFUL.
I love that word.
Do I love my life right now?
YES:)

110° in the Shade... But There was Plenty of Water

Can't beat the beauty of those Southern Utah Red Rocks!

Who in their right mind leaves 90 degree weather
to vacation in 110 degree weather?
Us.

Actually we took a quick, much needed get-away last week.

And my family indulged my love of musical theatre.
Tuachan's fabulous production of Disney's "The Little Mermaid"
was everything it was hyped to be.
Can I just say that we were "under the sea" almost literally.
The way Tuachan incorporates water into their shows
is nothing short of amazing!
"Broadway in the Desert" for sure.

Didn't care to see this show.
But couldn't resist an instant makeover:)

And we just had to stop at the filming location of
"High School Musical 2."

St. George Temple.

The greenery was lovely as always.
There were several families walking the grounds.
The girls were great to offer to take family photos for them.

she has always called these
The Pineapple Trees.

It made me remember that experience as a missionary

Each week we choose a day to spend together visiting a fun place.
One of the advantages of being the youngest child at home.
Our list includes: Picnic at Botany Pond, Dollar Movies, Color Me Mine, Thanksgiving Point, Gardner Village, Springville Art Museum, Birkenstaffs Toy Emporium, IKEA'S, and The Living Aquarium.

winner of the 2010 Newbery Medal for
"When You Reach Me."
The Newbery Award is the most prestigious
honor given in Children's Literature.
We loved our conversation with Rebecca.
She loved Provo and plans to return next February
To speak at the Provo Library.
We loved her book also.

Where did we meet Rebecca?
We attended the annual BYU Symposium on Books for Young Readers.
This is a much anticipated annual tradition in our family.
I have attended for 20 years.
Both for pleasure and to earn contact hours for my teaching certificate.
Since my girls were quite young they have taken turns attending with me.

This is David Wiesner.
He has won the Caldecott Medal 3 times.
It is the highest honor for illustration in Children's Literature.

He autographed this book for Cammy.
She was born on June 29, 1999.
He said he had signed several "birthday" books over the years,
But this was the first for the actual birth date and year.
Very cool!!

This is Gennady Spirin.
He looks like Santa Claus.
He was born on December 25th!
He is an exquisite artist!
Born and raised in Russia, he came to the USA
With his wife and three sons 20 years ago at the invitation
Of a book publisher.
He has illustrated many books.
Though he can speak English, he was nervous and had his son
Translate for him.
He was delightful.
His family are now US citizens.

Court gave me this beautiful book for Mother's Day.
I love this story.
Mr. Spirin personalized it for me.
His penmanship is gorgeous.

This is Mary Downing Hahn.
She writes historical fiction
And ghost stories.
She is fascinating to listen to.
I liked her.
She also has beautiful penmanship.

Court read this book in 5th grade.
She said to Ms. Hahn:
"This book terrified me when I was a kid."
She looked at Court, smiled, and said:
"Good."

White Lace and Promises...and Love Songs

Amber, a lovely friend of ours, married the man of her dreams, the handsome and kind-hearted Marcus,
in the Oquirrh Mountain LDS Temple last week.

Court acting as mic stand with Cammy wondering how much longer she has to stay in this dress and have good manners.

Caitlyn was honored to be asked to provide the music for the reception.
For two hours she covered songs requested by Amber.
I accompanied Cait on some old-time love songs from the American Songbook,
with a few Carpenters' classics thrown in for good measure.
"We've Only Just Begun" ...perfect.
Beautiful couple.
The evening was concluded with the guests lined up
for the send-off with lit sparklers in hand
as Amber and Marcus left to begin the adventure called marriage.

won over the hearts of all in attendance.
Wow...can that girl put on a show!
Such a gorgeous voice.
I got to spend a lot of time with her.
She is so kind, humble and genuine.

Mindy is 8 months pregnant and this is her last concert before she "nests."

Today was a bit bittersweet for Bill and I.
It marked the end of having a child in elementary school.
We've sat through this program 4 times now.

The adorable Meaghan Smith will be singing at the Rooftop Concert Series
June 3rd, 8:00 p.m. at Provo Town Square.
It's FREE!
She recently won some awards for her recordings.
In March she was presented with the JUNO
which is the equivalent of the Grammy in Canada.
I would describe her music as an updated take on the
lovely songs of the 1920-1940's era.
We are lucky to have her this season.

Robbie, Aaron, Stuart, Jacob and Brandon are Fictionist.

Hung out with these guys Friday night.
I was their green room manager for the Rooftop Concert Series.
Court was my awesome assistant.
And can these Mormon boys rock the roof!
One of the best LIVE bands I've ever heard.
All are excellent musicians.
And so very nice, polite and grateful.

city weekly

I had a few "moments" with front man Stuart Maxfield.
When I told him I was looking forward to hearing "Treasure These Moments,"
He started to sing it to me with his guitar right there on the couch in the green room.
He told me that he'd heard that I was a vocal coach and asked if I'd help him with some vocal warm-ups. Perhaps teach him some he didn't know.
(He has a great voice and amazing power belt.)
So, I made him do my "classic" lie on your back sirens.
He loved it and said it made him feel his voice throughout his body.
His wife was totally getting a kick out of the whole thing.
Loads of fun for me.
He told me he trained as a violinist and was in orchestra at BYU and studied jazz.
We talked about our love of the arts.
He said the arts saved him.

We started set up for the concert early in the morning. My husband was wonderful as always and took the morning off to help me string cafe lights and put up A-frames around the concert block and do food runs to prepare the green room for the bands. (Paul Jacobson and the Madison Arm were the opener and were terrific.)
The whole event was a blast.
I felt like I was 22 years old again.
My husband said it was fun to see me once again "in my element" :)
The next morning when I tried to get out of bed I felt like I was 82 years old.
But I'll do it all again next month!

Derby Days

It is often referred to as "the greatest two minutes in sports."

A Governor, An Award and An Ugly Dress...

Court would want to veto this photo on my blog, but as her mother I can override that decision.

When Court was in 6th grade she entered a national art contest for Hallmark Cards.
It was a contest to design a Mother's Day card.
The national winner's card would be published.
Out of thousands of entries per state, Court's card was selected for our state.
Her card was darling. A mother kangaroo with her joey in her pouch giving her a hug.

Each of the 51 winners were on display for a month at the Empire State Building in NY.
Court was featured in the newspaper, mentioned in Family Circle magazine, won a set of World Atlas Books and a dinner for our whole family was thrown at a local restaurant with a huge banner honoring her complete with a cake and balloons. All very festive.

Then she received a call from the Governor's office.
"The Governor would like to invite your family to come to his office so he can meet you and congratulate you on your talent."

So on the appointed day our entire family dressed up and headed to the State Capitol.
As it had just been Easter I had the girls wear their new dresses which I had so painstakingly sewn. Yes, I was one of those mothers who tried to be domestic and clever and made matching dresses each year for my little darlings.
(My younger daughters will be so relieved to know that our family photo with the Governor turned out blurry and will not be posted. But, yes, one daughter had green butterfly fabric and the other pink.)
WHAT WAS I THINKING?!
I MEAN, COURT WAS 12 YEARS OLD!
No wonder she hates dresses to this very day.
That was the last time I made matching dresses.

Oh, and Governor Leavitt was so warm and personable. He gave us a tour of his office and also Lt. Gov. Olene Walker's office. He presented Court with some memorabilia and took time to talk with her about her art work. He praised her card and asked if he could sign it. He told her to keep developing and sharing her talents with others.

Despite the dresses, it was a fun day.

Last evening we attended Orem High School's excellent production of "Les Miserable." Braden, a former student of mine was in the cast.
The show had been sold out for two months.
(I have a soft spot for OHS as I did my student teaching there.
In fact, Braden's mom was one of my students.)
Orem High has an outstanding theatre program whose quality has stayed consistent for over 30 years.
This show did not disappoint.
It was performed beautifully.

Coryn with the amazing Norm Crosby who played the role of Javert in the 25th Anniversary cast in London.

Last month PBS was showing the 25th Anniversary Concert performance of
"Les Miserable" in London.
Court and I were so excited to see that many of the main players were from the cast we saw last summer at the Queen's Theatre.
Producer Cameron Macintosh had hand-picked the cast.
Stunning performances.

He told us in no uncertain terms that if we didn't stand back he would not bring Nick out to meet us. The girl he is looking at pushed right in front of us. How rude!

And the British critics didn't give Mr. Jonas much credit. (Well, he is an American after all). But the kid can sing legit.
He did a great job.
Many aren't aware that
The Jonas Brothers exist because of Nick.
He started out as a child performer on Broadway.
That is where he was discovered.
(And, oh yes, he happened to have two older brothers who could perhaps
be in a band with him...)

If you have never seen "Les Miserable" staged. I highly recommend it. (Whenever the Broadway tour comes to the Capital Theatre in SLC it sells out in minutes.) It is one of the greatest stories ever told and one of the greatest musicals ever written. It is still running after 25 years. It will change you. The LDS Prophet Spencer W. Kimball called it the greatest book ever written next to the scriptures. Agreed.

Up on the Rooftop...or Rather, The Parking Garage

If you missed the Rooftop Concert Series at Provo Town Square last year, you just may want to mark your calendars for this year. Beside being really cool, it's FREE!
Court and I are on this year's crew/committee and the line-up is great. It is geared to the local university student demographic, but last year I looked around and noticed I wasn't the only "boomer" present. And the styles of music this year are diverse enough to appeal to different tastes.

The concerts were started by my friend, Courtney Kendrick (cjane enjoy it) as a thank you to the community and as a way to bring people downtown to see what it has to offer by way of local eateries and businesses. It is coordinated with the traditional First Weekend Gallery Strolls.

I'm particularly excited about the second concert which will feature our friend (a sponsor and member of the planning committee) Mindy Gledhill. (Her new CD is awesome!) Mindy's music will take you away to your favorite beach or to an afternoon at a European Cafe. Love her pure, delightful voice.

And joining Mindy will be Meghan Smith, the talented songstress from Nova Scotia . (If you're familiar with the soundtrack from "500 Days of Summer" you've heard her.) These two singers will be the perfect blend for a summer evening in Provo.
