This was our second time seeing a show in the famed
The theatre was established by director Sam Mendez
and is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Many celebrated actors have graced its stage over the years.
Coryn with Charlie
The first time we attended the Donmar we got to see
actor Charlie Cox perform and meet and talk with him afterwards.
Nor long after we met him he appeared in the first episode of
some little show called 'Downton Abbey' playing that dubious
character the Duke of Crowborough.
Charlie with Hugh Bonneville as Lord Grantham.
This time we attended the play 'Roots.'
A classic 1950's drama about a young woman finding her voice
and her place in the world.
The play starred excellent actress Jessica Raines.
She is best known for her starring role in
'Call the Midwife' which has been shown on PBS
and we absolutely adore it.
She also was seen recently in a popular episode of
Larkrise to Candleford of BBC
The marvelous Linda Bassett starred opposite
Jessica as her mother.
She plays one of our favorite characters, Queenie,
on 'Larkrise to Candleford.'
Linda is beloved in the theatre community.
She is well-known not only for her stage work,
but also for her roles in television and film.
We were thrilled to get to meet her afterwards.
She was so gracious and signed my program
and chatted with us about our 'holiday.'
I will forgive Coryn for this blurry photo
as she was shaking with excitement.
(While we were taking the photos,
Jessica rushed behind us to join friends in a waiting car,
so we missed out on meeting her.)
And this handsome man, Tom Hiddleston,
of whom I am a big fan,
will star in the next show at the Donmar.
He will play Shakespeare's 'Coriolanus.'
And if I could, I'd be on the next plane
back to London to see it.
Of course it is sold out.
