That's a Wrap

My daughter and her friends at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

"Storytellers broaden our minds:
engage, provoke, inspire,
and ultimately, connect us."
~Robert Redford

Another Sundance Film Festival has come and gone,
People who are not interested in the film industry may ask:
"What's the big deal about Sundance?"
Well, for one thing it is a great boost for the economy of Utah.
Many do not realize how much money is brought into the state
because of this festival.
And not just during the two weeks it runs, but throughout the year.

I recall attending in the early years when it was called
the U.S. Film Festival in Salt Lake City.
Founded in 1978 by Sterling VanWagenen, John Earle and Cirina Catania.
Robert Redford was it's chairman.
In 1980 it was moved to Park City to attract more crowds.
A few years later it was named Sundance Film Festival.

Throughout the year the festival provides resources for filmmakers,
film-music composers and playwrights among others.

I like how Sarah Hall from Moviefone puts it:
"People think Sundance is about the films, and they are sort of right,
but mostly wrong. Sundance is about the experience of being with people
who are recognized for telling their own stories
and who are celebrated for the things they are most passionate about.
That's the gift of Sundance."

Cassandra's Creative Bent

I've been a big fan of Cassandra Barney's art for years.
I fell in love with her Dad's art 25 years ago when I saw his
commissioned painting for the Utah Shakespeare Festival's
25th anniversary.
This year at the 50th anniversary, my husband bought me
that same James Christensen's print.

Cassandra and her sister are both renowned artists
in their own rights.
They come by their talents honestly.
Cassandra's husband Dan, was a favorite art and
photography teacher of my two oldest daughters.
See her work HERE.

It's Sundance Time

This is how the "Sundance Kid" looked when I met him.

A long time ago my paychecks were signed by this guy.

Another Masterpiece

Every January I get wrapped up in
PBS' Masterpiece Theatre.
The second season of
Downton Abbey is fabulous.
Who doesn't love Maggie Smith?

Just sharing a favorite song...

....Sung by a pretty good singer:)

Birds of a Feather...

Us with the Branning family (minus a few) and including
Courtney's husband, Tom.
We enjoyed a visit before Mason left on his 2 year
mission to Washington DC.

Have you ever met people where you have immediately felt a connection?
People you feel like you've known forever?
This is the case with our friends, The Brannings,
from Houston, Texas.

Our daughter, Coryn met their daughter Courtney
in a film class during their university years.
They became fast friends.
As a result we were blessed to meet Courtney's family.
Now we can't imagine life without their friendship.

Birthday Boy

Oh...the 70's

Thursday, January 12, 2012

She blew out all 27 candles..

Last night at our Book Group, my friend Ashley, our wonderful hostess,
surprised Court for her birthday.
She made a killer chocolate peanut butter cake.
Court was sincerely surprised, which made it even more fun.
And even more surprising to me:
"Most" of the ladies had a slice of the cake
despite the fact that it is a "New Year."
Ha, Ha! (Lost my bet on that one.)

A New Year's Creed

"Be true to yourself.
Make each day your masterpiece.
Help others.
Drink deeply from good books (and music).
Make friendships a fine art.
Build a shelter against a rainy day.
Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings everyday."

~The Seven Point Creed which Hall of Fame Coach
John Wooden kept in his wallet his entire life.

BYU Animation won it's 11th (in 8 years) student Emmy Award for "DreamGiver"
It also won for best musical score.
(My daughter is a graduate of this prestigious program.)

My alma mater had quite the impressive year.
From national attention for singers on network television's
"The Sing-Off"
to being selected "most popular university"
by U.S. News and World Report.

Read the list and see the clips

For Gabe and Eli

Our good friends have two very funny little guys
ages 6 and 3.

They like to choose a Christmas gift for us.
This year they chose Zebra Socks
"because I (Eli) can see them laughing and laughing
when they put them on!"

Last year they gave each of us a big chocolate fish:)
