Don't Blame the Brits

It's the Americans who are obsessing over this wedding.

Les Miz after 25 years

Coryn in front of The Queen's Theatre in London

Last evening we attended Orem High School's excellent production of "Les Miserable." Braden, a former student of mine was in the cast.
The show had been sold out for two months.
(I have a soft spot for OHS as I did my student teaching there.
In fact, Braden's mom was one of my students.)
Orem High has an outstanding theatre program whose quality has stayed consistent for over 30 years.
This show did not disappoint.
It was performed beautifully.

Coryn with the amazing Norm Crosby who played the role of Javert in the 25th Anniversary cast in London.

Last month PBS was showing the 25th Anniversary Concert performance of
"Les Miserable" in London.
Court and I were so excited to see that many of the main players were from the cast we saw last summer at the Queen's Theatre.
Producer Cameron Macintosh had hand-picked the cast.
Stunning performances.

Photo by Coryn. Nick Jonas at the stage door after his performance as Marius. Cute guy and great hair! The dude on the right was his scary bodyguard. He told us in no uncertain terms that if we didn't stand back he would not bring Nick out to meet us. The girl he is looking at pushed right in front of us. How rude!

And the British critics didn't give Mr. Jonas much credit. (Well, he is an American after all). But the kid can sing legit.
He did a great job.
Many aren't aware that
The Jonas Brothers exist because of Nick.
He started out as a child performer on Broadway.
That is where he was discovered.
(And, oh yes, he happened to have two older brothers who could perhaps
be in a band with him...)

If you have never seen "Les Miserable" staged. I highly recommend it. (Whenever the Broadway tour comes to the Capital Theatre in SLC it sells out in minutes.) It is one of the greatest stories ever told and one of the greatest musicals ever written. It is still running after 25 years. It will change you. The LDS Prophet Spencer W. Kimball called it the greatest book ever written next to the scriptures. Agreed.

Heal the World

" How about some chocolate?" We might more of us say these words to others, and more frequently--how healing would that prove to be. 'Look, we've had our differences, but how about some chocolate?' or: 'I'm so sorry: how about some chocolate?' or simply: 'Great to see you! How about some chocolate?'"

~Alexander McCall Smith

*Thanks for the quote, Court.

Up on the Rooftop...or Rather, The Parking Garage

If you missed the Rooftop Concert Series at Provo Town Square last year, you just may want to mark your calendars for this year. Beside being really cool, it's FREE!
Court and I are on this year's crew/committee and the line-up is great. It is geared to the local university student demographic, but last year I looked around and noticed I wasn't the only "boomer" present. And the styles of music this year are diverse enough to appeal to different tastes.

The concerts were started by my friend, Courtney Kendrick (cjane enjoy it) as a thank you to the community and as a way to bring people downtown to see what it has to offer by way of local eateries and businesses. It is coordinated with the traditional First Weekend Gallery Strolls.

I'm particularly excited about the second concert which will feature our friend (a sponsor and member of the planning committee) Mindy Gledhill. (Her new CD is awesome!) Mindy's music will take you away to your favorite beach or to an afternoon at a European Cafe. Love her pure, delightful voice.

And joining Mindy will be Meghan Smith, the talented songstress from Nova Scotia . (If you're familiar with the soundtrack from "500 Days of Summer" you've heard her.) These two singers will be the perfect blend for a summer evening in Provo.

Here's the line-up:

May 6th - Fictionist with Paul Jacobsen and the Madison Arm
June 3rd - Meaghan Smith with Mindy Gledhill
July 1st - The Abbey Road Show with Sarah Sample
August 5th - Joshua James
September 2nd - Neon Trees
October 7th - Lower Lights (A Hymn Revival)

Address: Rooftop of the parking terrace at 100 North and 100 West
Time: 8:00 p.m.
*A bonus to the concert is a beautiful view of our "Y" mountain.

3 Missionaries-To-Be...30 Years Ago

Me, Trey and Robbie outside the Raintree Recreation Hall before our Openhouse.

This very week 30 years ago, I had my "missionary farewell." Well, actually me, along with two of my best friends had OUR farewell meeting in our BYU ward. My roommate and BFF, Robbie and our "FHE" brother and close friend, Trey all received our mission calls on the same day. (Trey had been baptized a member of the Church just a year before.) Robbie was called to serve in Honduras, Trey in Taiwan and I was called to Texas. Having been away from home for 4 years I chose to have my "farewell" from my BYU ward. So we all decided to share a joint meeting. Very cool and very memorable.

After finals and going our separate ways (me to go home and have my wisdom teeth out), all three of us entered the MTC on the same day a month later. It was very comforting for me to see their smiling faces every day in the halls or at the cafeteria. As I wasn't learning a language my MTC stay was only 3 weeks and Robbie and Trey stayed 2 months. We stayed in touch during our missions and after, attended each others weddings, watched each others children grow up, go on missions, marry, and we have remained close friends all of these years. 30 years went by so fast!
